Near misses from UEFA EURO 2016 Round of 16 played between Italy and Spain
Gianluigi Buffon is the player of the match in UEFA EURO 2016 Round of 16 played between Italy and Spain
With Argentina’s Lionel Messi announcing his retirement from the international game, we all can’t quite help but ask, what if?
Italy outclassed the defending champions and move on to the quarterfinals to face Germany. Italy manager Antonio Conte says the Azzurri should be “extra proud” of beating defending champions Spain in the round of 16 at Euro 2016 on Monday. Conte’s Italy used goals from Giorgio Chiellini in the 33rd minute and Graziano Pelle in second-half stoppage time to stun the 2008 and 2012 Euro winners at the Stade de France. Conte was criticised at home and abroad for leaving some big names off his squad list for the competition but has made up for any lack of talent with tactical acumen, which…

Euro 2016: Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (19′), England 1-2 Iceland
Italy outclassed the defending champions and move on to the quarterfinals to face Germany. SAINT-DENIS, France — Italy defeated Spain 2-0 to reach the Euro quarterfinals. A big reason why? Long suffering Giorgio Chiellini. 1. Chiellini stands in the Italian line for the anthems next to Gianluigi Buffon, their arms tight around each other. Spain loom to their left. The atmosphere inside Stade de France is heavy under a low and threatening sky; it feels more like the moments before a final than the seventh match of the Round of 16. It feels that way because it was the final in 2012, when…
Italy outclassed the defending champions and move on to the quarterfinals to face Germany. Spain finished their Euro 2016 participation with a 2-0 loss to Italy in the last-16 round of the tournament. For the fourth consecutive match, Vicente del Bosque fielded the same starting line-up. After a disappointing first half, Spain trailed 1-0 and looked unable to break Italy’s high press or react to Daniele De Rossi’s influence on proceedings. The Spaniards reacted after half-time, dominating ball possession but struggling to create scoring chances. Right after Gianluigi Buffon saved…
Euro 2016: Ragnar Sigurdsson (6′), England 1-1 Iceland
Italy outclassed the defending champions and move on to the quarterfinals to face Germany. ESPN FC’s Taylor Twellman and Craig Burley discuss Italy’s 2-0 win over Spain in the round of 16. Antonio Conte’s Italy demonstrated that tactical brilliance is enough to defeat even the most talented of sides in their 2-0 win over Spain. The Azzurri are now through to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016. It’s remarkable what team unity can do for a side that lacks both in quality and star talent. A wonderful team atmosphere has allowed this squad to play with confidence and clear organisation, demonstrating urgency and intensity in order to expose the laborious nature of Spain’s passing game. True…

Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany believes Lionel Messi is not done with Argentina.
Explanation of SPI ESPN’s Soccer Power Index (SPI) is a rating system which uses historical data on both the international and club level to predict the outcome of a match. The algorithm uses several years of data, taking into account goals scored and allowed, quality of the lineup fielded, and the location of the match. In addition, SPI weights recent matches more heavily, and also takes into account the importance of the match, so a World Cup match counts much more than a Friendly. Predictions…

ESPN FC’s Craig Burley says Germany are not as strong as the side that won the 2014 World Cup, but could still win Euro 2016. Euro 2016: Shkodran Mustafi (19′) Germany 1-0 Ukraine Defending World Cup champions Germany started their Euro 2016 campaign off in good form, beating Ukraine 2-0 in their Group C opener. The Germans struck first just before the 20-minute mark, with Shkodran Mustafi heading his team in front from a set-piece delivery from Toni Kroos. Sami Khedira should have doubled Germany’s lead in the 29th minute after settling a pinpoint pass over the top of the Ukraine defence in the penalty area only to fire his well-struck half-volley…
ESPN FC’s Gab Marcotti explains why Belgium have what it takes to go all the way at Euro 2016. Eden Hazard will face new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte in Belgium’s Euro opener. LYON, France — Few players are as eager for the European Championship to start as Belgium forward Eden Hazard. The talented 25-year-old Hazard is in need of an uplifting performance after a puzzlingly poor season for Chelsea. Especially with future club coach Antonio Conte in the opposing dugout plotting schemes to defend him when Belgium take on Italy in their Euro 2016 group stage opener on Monday. “I just can’t wait for tomorrow to come around so I can begin this tournament,” Hazard said Sunday….
Arkadiusz Milik’s second half goal was the difference as Poland earned their first ever win at the European Championship. ESPN FC’s Craig Burley and Santiago Solari discuss Northern Ireland’s defensive tactics in their loss to Poland. Michael O’Neill acknowledged his Northern Ireland team’s introduction to major tournament football was an eye-opening experience as they were beaten in their first fixture at a finals since 1986. Arkadiusz Milik’s 51st-minute goal consigned O’Neill’s side to a 1-0 Euro 2016 loss to Poland in Nice, 30 years to the day since Billy Bingham’s side were beaten by Brazil at the Mexico World Cup. For a team that started two wing-backs who ply their trade in England’s third tier, O’Neill conceded facing…
Shkodran Mustafi rises high in the air to score a brilliant goal by a header for Germany. This is the goal from UEFA EURO 2016 Group Stage played between Germany and Ukraine
Arkadiusz Milik’s second half goal was the difference as Poland earned their first ever win at the European Championship. ESPN FC’s Craig Burley and Santiago Solari discuss Northern Ireland’s defensive tactics in their loss to Poland. Poland’s first-ever victory in the European Championship didn’t come easily, and for large periods of the first half it looked as if it might not come at all. With Northern Ireland’s ultra-defensive tactics looking to negate the threat of both Robert Lewandowski and Arkadiusz Milik, it could have been a frustrating afternoon for the Bialo-Czerwoni. But if Lewandowski isn’t given the chance to score, it’s his job to create the space for those behind him to take aim; and just six minutes into the…
Italy head coach Antonio Conte reveals he wishes he could join his player’s on the pitch to help them win tough matches. Italy’s Angelo Ogbonna says he is excited about the Azzurri’s future, with Giampiero Ventura set to replace Antonio Conte following Euro 2016. According to Italian media, the library at the riverside hotel complex in Montpellier that serves as the Azzurri’s home base has multiple copies of Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War.” This makes sense, since Italy head coach Antonio Conte appears to have turned some of its tenets into articles of faith. “Appear weak when you are strong and strong when you are weak.” It’s the basis of tactics and strategy. Mask areas where you are subpar. Fool the opposition into committing resources where they are…
Luka Modric’s stunning volley was enough for Croatia to defeat Turkey 1-0 in their Euro 2016 opener. ESPN FC’s Mike Tirico, Taylor Twellman and Vincent Kompany recap Croatia’s 1-0 win over Turkey. Following his game-winning Euro performance, Croatia’s Luka Modric is most happy about his team’s overall performance. Many at home were sceptical, but Croatia defied expectations and produced a fine performance to defeat Turkey 1-0 in their Euro 2016 opener. They may not have played to their usual strengths and controlled the game through possession — but they were the stronger side, almost from start to finish, and the win was thoroughly deserved. The particularly inspired Luka Modric scored the decisive scorcher from outside the box late in the first half, and although Croatia later missed a handful of other…
