People are comparing toilet roll holders around the world and Japan wins again

There’s a bit of toilet humour going down on Internet at the moment.

You see, even though the humble toilet paper roll holder is part of your daily routine, it probably doesn’t enter your mind unless you run out of paper at an unfortunate moment. That’s why it’s baffling so many people are sharing videos of badly-designed toilet roll holders from around the world on Reddit. Baffling, but also amazing.

It’s everything you never knew you needed.

Of course, Japan leads the pack with this ingenious but admittedly rather ugly-looking toilet roll holder, which was posted by user wisyf in the GIFs subreddit. Look at how incredibly simple it is to replace the roll — all you need is one hand. Pure brilliance.  Read more…

If you’re unsure which political party to vote for Saturday in the Australian election, never fear: There are a multitude of online tools that can help.

There are the questionnaires created by news outlets including Fairfax Media‘s YourVote tool and ABC’s Vote Compass, but you may have also seen ISideWith results being shared by friends in your Facebook feed.

Created by former roommates Taylor Peck and Nick Boutelier in the U.S., the platform asks a series of questions on social, economic and political issues that help you decide which party aligns best with your views. Devastating R.I.P. video will make you mourn for Sydney’s lost nightlife

A video for Sydney’s not-so-vibrant nightlife hit the Internet on Thursday night with the emotional weight of an Oscar in-memoriam package.

In 2014 Sydney’s nightlife decided it was time for bed. Well, conservative and strict step-father figure, NSW Premier Mike Baird decided, much to the chagrin of a lot of the young people in the state.

Two years on and Sydney production company Shifted Pictures, purveyors of beautiful timelapse videography, has used its artistic talents to tug at our heart strings and to accentuate just how the once vibrant landscape of Sydney’s nightlife is as dead as a doornail.

The latest offering from the company, a piece entitled Closed Sydney, depicts the eerie stillness of the once lively city. The only movement onscreen is traffic whizzing past ghostly, empty buildings that once played host to many a fancy-free dance-off, a sneaky pash and shot-induced hazy memories.

Chevrolet was the first automaker to add 4G LTE connectivity to every model in its lineup. And now, just in time for the Fourth of July, the American automaker is cutting its data plan pricing virtually in half.

The Wi-Fi hotspot generated from the vehicle’s 4G data connection can support up to seven devices at once. Chevrolet brags it has sold more than 2.1 million vehicles with LTE connectivity since June 2014.

The brand now offers four distinct data plans. At the low end, buyers can choose 1 gigabyte per month for $10 per month — down from $20 per month. At the top end, customers can step up from 10 GB  for 12 months plan to  20 GB, for the same price of $150. Read more…

The app that matches surplus food with the hungry

Plenty of businesses throw a ridiculous amount of catering into the garbage every day, often as people go hungry on the streets outside their office buildings.

What if there was a push-button way of matching the surplus with the demand? What if an app could actually be useful in this situation?

That’s the premise behind Copia, a service for on-demand food donations. It offers an easy way for businesses to provide their uneaten food to nearby shelters and other nonprofits that provide food to people in need.

Here’s how it works: businesses, event hosts or any other group that wants to make a donation snaps a photo of their extra food — Copia takes anything, cooked or uncooked, packaged or unpackaged — and schedule a pickup time in the app or website.   Read more…

Tom Hanks shows heroism is complicated in ‘Sully’ trailer

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fstory%2fthumbnail%2f13166%2fscreen_shot_2016-06-29_at_5.40.07_pm

Clint Eastwood loves his American heroes.

But the story of Captain “Sully” Sullenberger — played by Tom Hanks — will be all about the Monday-morning quarterbacking that surrounded the US Airways pilot after he safely landed an Airbus A320 in the Hudson River in 2009. At least if this first trailer is to be believed.

All 155 souls onboard survived. Though most of us remember Sullenberger as an instant hero, his reputation was in peril long after that fateful day.

Warner Bros. will release Sully on Sept. 9.

As President Barack Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto gathered for what was jokingly called the “Three Amigos Summit,” the specter of Donald Trump seemed to hover close.

While subjects ranging from trade, the recent “Brexit” vote and Tuesday’s deadly attack in Turkey were also discussed, Trump was a hot topic of conversation.

President Obama took Trump on directly when he delivered a spirited statement on the notion of Trump and “populism” during an afternoon press conference.  Read more…

In Australia, you can’t even get a date these days without being accosted by a politician.

Instead of simply legislating to give the youth what they want in the July 2 election — think marriage equality, jobs and action on climate change — the politicians have instead chosen to bombard them with sound bites in the digital spaces where they spend time.

One Australian political party, The Greens, has even been sending campaign messages on the gay dating app, Grindr. “Don’t get screwed!” certainly seems persuasive. Read more…
